How to Find the Right Keywords for Your Business Blog

A Google search is one person looking for one answer to one question.

Your job as a marketer or business owner is to help that person find the answer they need…and, hopefully, show them that you hold the solution they just can’t live without.

One of the biggest variables in successfully moving prospective customers from their search bar to your site is Google viewing your content as helpful to the searcher. And getting Google’s attention requires, among many things, a killer keyword strategy.

You can post the most prolific blog content that’s ever graced the internet. But, without a well-developed keyword strategy, those words – and your website - are likely to stay hidden from the world. And, more importantly, your blog won’t attract the web traffic your business needs to drive revenue.

How to Find the Right Keywords for Your Business Blog

Lifting your website high up into the stellar regions of Google’s search rankings takes more than a few thoughtfully placed keywords. It takes an understanding of which keywords can deliver the right audience to your product or service’s doorstep.

For instance, let’s say you sell shoes. ‘Shoes’, therefore, may be the keyword that best describes the product you sell.

But, guess who else sells shoes? Yep…just a few other hundred companies, many of whom have outlandish budgets to throw at things like Google and Facebook ads.

Whether you sell shoes, essential oils, or….content writing services…finding the right mix of keywords that describe what you sell and that you can realistically rank for is the sweet spot.

When you’re ready to begin your keyword research and use your blog as a serious marketing tool, you have a few choices. One is to work with a professional blog writer or content marketing agency. Both should have the tools in place to help you conduct keyword research and put a strong SEO-focused content strategy in place for your business.

If you’re looking to keep things simple and use a little elbow grease, rudimentary keyword research can begin by simply thinking about your ideal customer base. What would they search for to find your product or service? What questions could they ask Google to lead them to discover your business?

How to Use Tools like AI to Write Long-tail Keywords

AI is an amazing tool for blog writers and content marketers. In particular, ChatGPT can help you start a list of long-tail keywords.

Try a simple prompt like, “Write a list of long-tail keywords based on the keyword ‘content marketing’ that can help my content marketing agency rank.” In your prompt, use a keyword that describes your business or the product or service you offer.

While ChatGPT is not a traditional keyword tool, it can help you with an initial list that you can then test. You can also pair AI with keyword research tools -  SEMRush, WordTracker, or others - to better understand organic search volume and organic competition for your keywords.

However you conduct your keyword research, test, test, and test again. As you begin to populate your website with high-quality blog content, keep an eye on which of your keywords are driving your customers to your site.
