Brand Story Development
Brand story development is the process of taking your brand’s reason for being – its origin and purpose – and crafting that story as a narrative that appeals to the hearts and minds of your audience to drive trust, build relationships, and generate revenue.
Through a process involving deep information gathering and strategic narrative building, TwoRoads Strategy delivers a documented brand story with a messaging framework that your entire team can use across every marketing channel, sales channel, and at every touchpoint with your audience.
Using Your Brand Story to Connect the Dots
Ask five employees what the company does, and you get five answers, all partly accurate. That inconsistency is expensive: it slows sales, weakens recruiting, and makes every piece of marketing start from zero. It is also the reason AI assistants describe some companies crisply and others vaguely. Long language models can only repeat what is stated clearly somewhere else.
The fix? A story everyone – including your customers – can easily grasp and rally behind.
The Brand Story Development Process
Discovery. Stakeholder interviews with the founder, leadership, sales, delivery, and often customers. We ask why the organization started, its values, purpose, what it refuses to do, and why customers choose them.
Synthesis. We find the through-line. This is the part that cannot be templated.
Framework. A written narrative, a positioning statement, three to five messaging pillars, proof points for each, and language guidance — including the words to stop using.
Activation. An initial series of stories created to bring your story to life.
Where Your Brand Story Shows Up
We capture your brand story in multiple forms that allow our storytelling team to continue to tell your story month after month across your communications channels.
- Origin or Founder’s Story, written piece
- Brand Story Mood Board
- Team Member Stories, short-form social videos
- Customer Stories, short-form videos and written articles
Frequently asked questions
What is brand story development?
Brand story development is the process of defining what an organization stands for and creating consistent language to express it. The output is typically a documented narrative, a positioning statement, messaging pillars with supporting proof points, and usage guidance so every team member describes the organization the same way.
How is brand story development different from a rebrand?
A rebrand generally changes visual identity — logo, color, typography, and name. Brand story development changes what you say rather than how you look. The two often happen together, but story work can be done entirely on its own, and usually should come first so design has something to express.
How long does brand story development take?
Most brand story projects at TwoRoads Strategy run four to six months from kickoff to final framework. The largest variable is stakeholder interview scheduling. Projects that include customer research rather than internal interviews alone typically take longer, but produce noticeably sharper positioning. We will tell you at kickoff which of the two your situation warrants.
